At the outset of the movie, Shaucha (Gulshan Devaiah) participates in a drive to promote hygiene. He's really making some headway when he comes across two youngsters relieving themselves in public. The shock this revelation causes helps him to convince their parents about how harmful open-defecation is. Driven by a strong resolve, he hammers away at the problem and finally gets them to understand that their way of life is risky and could cause dangerous diseases. This story is based on a true incident from Madhya Pradesh where villagers changed their lifestyles for betterment under "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan". A family of Akhilesh Yadav, leads a simple life. The father, Mangal Singh (Mahabir Yadav), is a farmer while the wife, Suman Devi (Meenakshi Sheshadri) takes care of domestic chores in the house. They have two children, Vivaan Singh (Rahul Dev) who studies in third grade and Kajal (Rashvi Shetty), who studies in 7th standard. So far everything seems fine in their lives but one day they are told by an officer to construct toilets immediately since the Government has declared all over India under the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. Without a second thought the family agrees to the officer’s suggestion. There comes a day when the officer arrives at their house and tells them to construct toilets in 70% of all households in India. Mangal Singh understands it will be difficult but he decides to do so. And so begins his journey to educate villagers about open defecation and its ill effect on the environment and community, and also his struggle for better sanitation in his village and that of his children. The film's soundtrack was composed by Sajid-Wajid with lyrics penned by Mehboob Pathan, Rahat Indori, Baburao Patel & Javed Akhtar. The song "Dil Ke Maane Cha Chupa" was penned by the latter, while the other songs were written by Patels. The soundtrack consists of 1 original track and 6 remixes. The film released on 5 June 2018, alongside other Indian films "Mardaani", "Mr. X" and "Nahrein". It did not do well at the box office due to the release date being shifted from April, making it lesser known among audience. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Rediff.com reviewed the film 3.5/5, stating that "[...] it is a must watch for those who want to know the ground reality of the country". Review aggregator website "Reviews Arena" gave it 1.7 out of 5, citing that "For all those who were wondering if India has become the world's largest open defecation nation, we hope this movie answers your question". "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha" was awarded the Best Hindi Film at the Indira Gandhi Awards for National Integration and Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress at IIFA Utsavam 2018. cfa1e77820
