Jurgen Weineck is a graduate professor of neuroanatomy at Harvard University whose research focuses on the human sleep-wake cycle, circadian rhythms, and sleep disorders. His research interests include how these cycles are controlled by different areas in the brain, what influences our day length and our natural waking time, what happens when we have to stay awake for too long or fall asleep too quickly. Professor Weineck authored an ebook that discusses how he manages his own sleep schedule to get the best possible rest without becoming too fatigued during the day. Professor Weineck has published work in "Sleep", "Current Biology", and the "American Journal of Human Biology". He was born in Ulm, Germany, and grew up between Germany and France. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in neurobiology from Case Western Reserve University. His dissertation focused on the regulation of circadian rhythms and the sleep-wake cycle by hormones such as melatonin and cortisol. He completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, where he held positions at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He has conducted research on the effects of sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm in individuals with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.  His research also focuses on the role of sleep in learning and memory, particularly when it comes to children who are learning a second language. A recent study that he worked on at Harvard Medical School shows that young mice spend more time exploring a new environment when they’ve had a long period of sleep in comparison with their nocturnal counterparts who only received a short period of sleep. This suggests that sleeping more can improve learning and memory; however, these findings must be replicated before they can be applied to humans.  He is currently the director of the Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. He was first exposed to the importance of sleep during his time as a medical resident, when he began researching ways to treat insomnia. He discovered that he enjoyed working on sleep-related research, and later started his own research program at Harvard Medical School.  One of his most recent projects involved conducting studies with preschoolers who had recently immigrated to America; this project showed that children with lower levels of melatonin were having issues sleeping at night due to jet lag, which caused hampers their ability to learn in school during the day. His research has been widely reported by the media, including "The Washington Post", "The Boston Globe", "Time Magazine", Discovery News, Business Insider, The Telegraph, Yahoo Health, and CNN. He also serves on the editorial board of Sleep Medicine Reviews. Professor Weineck’s ebook discusses how he balances his circadian rhythm with his busy work schedule by optimizing his sleep schedule to get an ideal amount of sleep without becoming too fatigued during the day. The book also explains how he uses melatonin to fall asleep in the evening when appropriate and ease his body into the correct circadian rhythm in the morning when he wakes up after spending time in a bright environment. cfa1e77820
